About Bribie Island

In Queensland, three major sand islands form the coastline sheltering the northern part of Moreton Bay – North Stradbroke Island, Moreton Island, and beautiful Bribie Island. Bribie Island is approximately 34 kilometres long and 8 kilometres at its widest point, and is the smallest and most northerly of the three islands.Bribie Island is separated from the mainland by Pumicestone Passage: it hugs the coastline, tapering to a long spit at Caloundra – its most northern point. The ocean side of Bribie Island has only a small surf break because it’s quite sheltered from prevailing winds by associated sandbanks and by Moreton Island. The lee side is very calm, with beautiful white sandy beaches in the south. Most of Bribie Island consists of forestry plantations and uninhabited National Park (55.8 square kilometres). However, the southern end of Bribie Island has been urbanised as part of the Moreton Bay region. Bongaree, Bellara, Woorim and Banksia Beach are the main suburbs. In 1963 a bridge from Sandstone Point on the mainland was completed. At the southern tip of Bribie Island, Buckley’s Hole is a notable bird habitat and refuge.

How Can You Help?

All money contributed goes to charitable activities, and this includes the purchase of equipment and rescue gear.

Volunteer Surf Life Savers visiting from 311 clubs right across the country patrol our extensive 35,000 km Australian coastline, assisting more than 100 million beach goers each and every year. The enormous cost of mobilizing this huge exercise is only possible due to our amazingly supportive community. All donations received are directed into the four core areas that require continuous funding: these are – first aid supplies, rescue gear and equipment, community Surf Safety education programs, and Life Saver training.

Surf Life Saving is a non-profit organization, so please remember that our wonderful Life Savers gladly volunteer their time and energy to protect us by patrolling our beaches.
